Big George Fant has found a new home in the NFL, slightly being closer to his Kentucky roots. As reported by Adam Schefter, Fant has signed a 3 year, 30 million dollar deal that curtails him in a starting role with the New York Jets. This also guarantees him with a 13.7 million dollar off the top.
Going into the NFL 2020 offseason, there was a high demand for offensive linemen outside of the news coverage of high profile offensive free agents. The Bowling Green native and Hilltopper alum was one of the sleeper picks to watch out for during the first official day of free agency.
Fant was scheduled to be released along with fellow right tackle Germain Ifedi after the 2019 season as unrestricted free agents. Fant played in all 16 regular-season games with seven starts with the Seattle Seahawks. In his four year career with the team, he accounted for 1507 offensive snap counts including 200 appearances on special teams. He was resigned to a one year deal to stay in Seattle in 2019.
He will join a Jets team who is wasting no time in strengthening up their offensive line to protect quarterback Sam Darnold and give some help for a potential comeback season for running back Le’veon Bell. The Jets had finished with a 7–9 record, at a third-place finish in the AFC East. As a whole, the offensive unit was ranked 31st in the NFL in total production. This is a move that is expected to improve the Jets under the second year of Adam Gase, who previously was the head coach of fellow rivals, the Miami Dolphins.
Congratulations George on the huge contract. You have deserved every penny. Hiltopper Nation is behind you.
