Happy 4th of July! A day where you can unabashedly eat as many hot dogs and/or hamburgers you crave and it’s socially acceptable (come to think of it, that’s just a Wednesday in America…).
Anyway, there are two WKU-related patriotic moments that always stick out in my mind.
The first is the first ever WKU home game the Tops held during my career as a student, against Navy on September 10 in a 40–14 defeat. No, it isn’t memorable for anything that happened on the field except for two things — the literal fact that that was the first home game played by the Tops in my academic career and the fact that I wasn’t there.
I had made a point to vow that I’d be at every home game for my four year career…and then my parents decided to get remarried that weekend, so it became the first time I went home as a college student. Just as cool, right?
The second moment also involves Navy; following the 19–7 victory against the Midshipment in 2013, I had heard that some Navy players were upset at the fact that Antonio Andrews threw a salute after his two touchdowns that day, without realizing that he, himself, came from a military background, and that it was to honor his family and all in the line of service, not to rub salt in the wound.
As boring as those may be those are my two somewhat patriotic WKU-related stories. I’m sure some of you have some as well, and I be they’re a lot better, so please share them with us!
Anyway, enjoy today, enjoy the food, enjoy the family, and enjoy celebrating the red, white and blue.
