Back in August, the soon-to-officially-launch American Alliance of Football announced their first 100 that had signed contracts. Of those 100 players, five former Hilltoppers inked deals with the league — Andrew Jackson, Brett Harrington, Tyler Ferguson, Chris Johnson and Steve Donatell.
Fast forward six months, and the weekend before the AAF officially kicks off, only one former Hilltopper finds himself on a 52-man roster: Old Hickory himself.
On Wednesday, the Memphis Express, who Jackson originally signed with, announced he had made the cut. From August to today, the Express cut the aforementioned Harrington and Ferguson, as well as former WKU running back Antonio Andrews.
The final roster for the Arizona Hotshots was devoid of Joe Brown and Chris Johnson, who were listed on the team’s online roster as of December 3, and the Atlanta Legends have cut former Topper tight end Steve Donatell since then as well.
Jackson’s stint with the Express marks his first pro football venture since 2017, when he played for the Indoor Football League’s Spokane Empire. The Express is his first “traditional,” football gig since 2014, when he played for the team that drafted him in the Indianapolis Colts.
For Jackson, his season starts on Feb. 10 at Birmingham in a 1 p.m. CT game that’ll be available to watch…somewhere.
For the rest of the ProTops who aren’t on 52-man rosters, I’m sure there’s more than that. This league is bound to have practice squads and such, and a couple may find gigs that away.
