Last weekend (if you count Thursday as a weekend), football officially reentered our lives, and this weekend you’re going to get a whole heapin’ helping of it, whether you like it or not.
All 32 teams will see action this weekend, and 11 ProToppers should see action as well. And, get this — outside of games that include a ProTop on both the home and away team, every former Hilltopper will play on the road this week.
Wild.
Joel Iyiegbuniwe, Chicago Bears; at Cincinnati (Thurs., 6 p.m.)
Iggy will (hopefully) suit up for his first preseason game as the Bears continue their preseason in Cincinnati. (How many of you will be there?!) The game starts at 6 p.m. and is not slated for a live national broadcast.
Deon Yelder, New Orleans Saints; at Jacksonville (Thurs., 6 p.m.)
In a game that I’ll be able to watch locally (!!!), Deon Yelder will look to make his case for why he stands out among the log jam of Saints tight ends when the Who Dats head to DUUUUUUUUUUVVVVVVVAAAAAAAALLLLL.
Prince Charles Iworah, Washington Redskins; at New England (Thurs., 6:30 p.m.)
PCI will look to strut his stuff against the Pats as he looks to prove hes more than just a depth signing.
Omarius Bryant, Tyler Higbee; Los Angeles Rams: at Baltimore (Thurs., 6:30 p.m.)
Higbee will look to cement his TE1 status as Bryant will get some quality first-half time against the Ravens.
Taywan Taylor, Tennessee Titans; at Green Bay (Thurs., 7 p.m.)
Taylor enters the first preseason game as a WR1, and we’ll see if he can show out on the game field like he has on the practice field against the Cheese Heads.
Mike White, Dallas Cowboys at Darrell Williams, Jr., San Francisco 49ers (Thurs., 9 p.m.)
White will get his first taste of NFL life against former Topper Darrell Williams in our first head-to-head ProTopper game of the preseason. White came in as QB3 on the depth chart, behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush, but for all intents in purposes that’s due to Rush’s previous NFL experience. White will look to show he deserves the title of backup.
As for Williams, he’ll look to have a strong first showing as well, as he came in third on the 9ers depth chart.
For those who want to watch, you’ll be able to thanks to NFL Network.
Jack Doyle, Indianapolis Colts at George Fant, Seattle Seahawks (Thurs., 9 p.m.)
For Doyle, there’s not much to this. Get in, get some game reps, don’t get hurt.
Fant, on the other hand, will not only look to reestablish himself on the Seahawks offensive line, but will be playing a bit of positioning as well as Pete Carroll continues to consider tinkering Fant’s placement on the line.
Key for both of these guys (as well as everyone else this weekend); stay. healthy.
Forrest Lamp, Los Angeles Chargers; at Arizona Cardinals (Sat., 9 p.m.)
Forrest Lamp will hopefully? play this week? I say hopefully because he still could be out of commission as he rehabs, and he wasn’t listed on this week’s Chargers’ depth chart.
