#ProTops: Best Case Scenario For Brandon Doughty in 2017
It must be quite the life that Brandon Doughty lives.
It must be quite the life that Brandon Doughty lives.
He is a fan-favorite everywhere he goes — okay, everywhere he’s been, at least, which is two places — and in one of those spots, he doesn’t really even have to do anything.
A favorite of Hilltopper fans for obvious reasons, he’s loved in Miami as well — the hometown kid who now suits up for the Phins.
Regardless of how much Doughty is loved and revered by fans, there’s one downside to his time in the NFL — he hasn’t seen the field, and likely wont for the foreseeable future (in this instance, the “foreseeable future” is “2017”).
Doughty saw the field last preseason and started last season as a member of the 53-man roster, but what does 2017 hold in store for him?
No, that’s a tad too easy. How about this question — what is the best-case scenario for Doughty as we approach the 2017 season?
Okay, a quick sidenote — of course the best-case for Doughty would be “Dolphins’ starting quarterback.” And, as much as I would love that, I’m going to take a more realistic approach to this.
So, now that that’s out of the way, I ask again — what is the best-case scenario for Brandon Doughty in 2017?
The very, very best-case for him is finishing the season as #2 on the Dolphins depth chart. That would mean injuries to guys like Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore and maybe even David Garrard in order to put Doughty in that position, but he’d be there. However, if you’re a Dolphins fan, that scenario leaves much to be desired, as The Phinsider explains:
Ideally, if we don’t see Doughty suit up for the Dolphins this season, it likely means good things overall. Yes, we’d like to see him develop in Gase’s offense. We’d also like to see him show off his accurate arm, which he displayed during his time at Western Kentucky. However, if Doughty ever were to start or even become the Dolphins’ #2 quarterback, it would likely spell the end of the 2017 season.
So, yeah, a lot would have to break Doughty’s way (which is a weird way of putting it when talking about guys having to get injured) for him to reach that mark.
But, as long as Doughty is on the 53-man and is getting practice snaps and learning how to run an NFL offense, this year can only be a positive. Any progression he makes in practice and on the preseason field (and, juuuuust maybe on an NFL-proper field) can put him in a good spot to maybe start earning his in-game stripes in 2018.
