After getting drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 10th round this past June in the MLB Draft, former WKU third-baseman Danny Hudzina can already add a second title to his professional career after just one season — champion.
The State College Spikes defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades (affiliates of the Rays, who are the team directly below the Bowling Green Hot Rods) two games to none to take the New York-Penn League crown last night, and it was Hudzina who propelled the Spikes to the title.
Danny crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to give State College a 2–1 lead, which would wind up being the final score.
Hudzina finished the regular season this year with a .239 batting average in 56 games played (the NYPL is what they call “short-season,” so the team itself only plays around 70 regular-season games), with four home runs (tied for second-most with the Spikes) and 24 RBI. He was also named a NYPL All-Star.
We’ll have a full roundup of the three #ProTops who played minor league baseball this summer in the next few days, but in the in-between, congrats to Danny and the Spikes on the NYPL title, and to Danny himself for a pretty solid inaugural campaign.
