On Wednesday, former Hilltopper point guard Darius Thompson was named the Most Valuable Player in the Dutch Basketball League after garnering 177 voting points, finishing 50 points clear of the second-place finisher and teammate Maurice Watson, Jr.
Thompson also became the 35th American to win the award.
As the tweet above states, Darius also finished Top 3 in MVP voting for the FIBA Europe Cup, which is a competition comprised of professional teams across all of the continent.
Thompson led his team, ZZ Leiden, to a 29–3 regular season record in league play and a 6–8 record in FIBA Europe Cup play, leading the team in points per game (24), steals (3) and in player efficiency rating (34.84).
Buried in the lede here is the fact that Thompson will also be spending the summer stateside to compete in the NBA Summer League in both Utah and Las Vegas.
While I don’t believe he has signed with a team yet, he’ll be able to show is stuff in front of American scouts and could find his way into a contract with a G-League team by summer’s end.
Which would be cool.
The Las Vegas league will run from July 5–15.
Thompson’s team, ZZ Leiden, currently are in first place after 32 games played with a 29–3 record. Their next game is set for Thursday at 1 p.m. CT.
