After spending the past two seasons on the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad, the Davie, Florida native and esteemed Hilltopper alum Brandon Doughty has been waived from the team, according to multiple sources.
Doughty was drafted by the Dolphins as the 223rd overall pick in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft and has been with the Dolphins, mostly as a practice team member, since then. Head Coach Adam Gase liked Doughty a lot from the get-go and wanted him to develop into his system, but he never played for Miami in the regular season.
The Dolphins had starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill go down with an injury at the end of 2016 and was unable to play all of the 2017 season as well but instead of looking at the quarterbacks he had on his team at the time (Doughty, Matt Moore, and David Fales) Gase chose to bring in one of his old friends and seasoned veteran Jay Cutler to become the team’s starting quarterback for 2017.
Now with the 2018 NFL season coming into view, Gase has made drastic roster changes in hopes to not only change the culture of the locker room but to also go a new direction. As of now, Tannehill will be healthy with Miami again along with backup David Fales but this off-season, Gase brought in Brock Osweiler who will now more than likely be their #2 guy at QB.
And if that wasn’t enough to seal Doughty’s fate at Miami, there have been numerous rumors that the Dolphins will pursue a quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft. Most analyst speculation has them grabbing Heisman winner Baker Mayfield.
Brandon Doughty will now move on to his next chapter, hopefully still in the NFL, this off-season as he looks for a new place to call home. Hopefully a place that he would have a better chance of actually seeing some playing time. If Gase wasn’t doing to use him after all the injuries the past two seasons, I knew he probably wouldn’t use him at all.
Doughty leaves Miami with 448 passing yards completing 39 of his 69 (ed. note — nice) pass attempts along with two touchdowns and two interceptions; all coming in the 2016 and 2017 preseasons.
