Even during George Fant’s senior year with the WKU basketball team, there were rumblings that NFL scouts were coming to Topper hoops game in order to scout the Bowling Green native for their team.
Such rumblings led to Fant hanging up the sneakers for the cleats in 2015 as he suited up for the Brohm Squad, playing primarily tight end and helping out with special teams, and earned his third conference title in his second sport during his Toppers career.
While it wasn’t necessarily a surprise Fant wasn’t drafted, he did get a call from, and eventually signed with, the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent.
Well, apparently Fant has impressed some of Seattle’s higher ups, because he was getting first team snaps during camp on Friday.
At offensive tackle.
In a story from the Seattle Times, Bob Condotta runs down, and talks to, Fant about not just playing with the first team (including, of course, the likes of Russell Wilson), but also about playing offensive tackle for the first time in his life.
You’ll have to read the article for all the juicy deets — it is well worth the read — head coach Pete Carroll, a personal favorite in the pro game of mine, had some great things to say about Fant.
“He’s doing a great job to be handling what he’s handling with no background,” coach Pete Carroll said this week. “He’s a very interesting kid, and he’s working hard at it. Nice athlete.” — From Bob Condotta’s article in the Seattle Times
Condotta also makes sure to point out that Fant certainly isn’t a lock for the 53-man roster, but also says that taking first team snaps also isn’t something to take lightly.
We’ll have a full rundown of the week that was in camp around the NFL with your favorite former Toppers later this weekend.
In the meantime, what do you think of Fant getting first team snaps? Will he make the Seahwaks 53-man roster? Let us know in a comment below or on twitter @TheTowelRackWKU.
