After a historic draft night for WKU Football, some of WKU’s biggest weapons on offense are now on professional rosters. One of them being lethal wide-out Taywan Taylor.
In the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans selected the WKU senior wide receiver making him the #72 overall pick in the draft. He will also be wearing #13 for the Titans next season.
The Titans knew what they were looking for, and knew what they were getting, when they made their selection, as Taylor is going to help meet an immediate need for the Titans next season. But not without some competition.
The wide receiver position was definitely one of need for the Titans. Their young quarterback, and former Heisman winner, Marcus Mariota has been showing glimpses of what he can be (despite injuries), but he needs play-makers to throw the ball to.
The Titans were quite aware of that going into the draft. It was such a big need that they selected arguably the best receiver in the draft Corey Davis with the #5 overall pick from Western Michigan in the first round. But don’t let that keep you from thinking Taylor won’t play any his rookie year.
Tennessee hasn’t really had a lot of consistency at the wide receiver position in recent years. They have gotten some good players at the position but would wind up losing them somehow so they’re in need of some younger players to step up. The Titans will return one of their most productive receivers with Rishard Matthews along with Harry Douglas and Tajae Sharpe but outside of that, they don’t have much…until now.

Corey Davis is someone who will likely play right away with the other three receivers previously named, but the Titans will still have young receivers K.J. Maye, Tre McBride, Jonathan Krause, AND Taywan Taylor that will all be looking to make an impact.
One thing that will help Taylor a bunch is the ability to play at the slot position as well as his speed while running routes. He can play on the inside and outside with speed and with his drive and ability to catch the ball, he could make some big plays. Obviously the Titans feel like they need Taylor or else they wouldn’t have traded up to get him in the third round so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him learn and get some playing time.
While he may not be a starter right away, I would still look for Taylor to help the Titans receiving core with some much needed plays this upcoming season as he begins his NFL journey.
What was your reaction when Taylor got selected by Tennessee? What do you see his role with the Titans being? How much playing time will he see? Let us know in a comment below, or on twitter @TheTowelRackWKU.
