Mike White is looking to become the highest-ever drafted quarterback from WKU (having only to out-do Brandon Doughty being selected in the seventh round, 223rd overall), and after his performance at WKU’s pro day last week, he should be well on his way to doing so.
The draft prep blog NEPatriotsDraft.com (who I literally only found looking for write-ups on White, so I don’t know if they just hiatus half of the year or what) have done a couple of breakdowns of White, and New England is a team who has shown interest in him so they might be trying to get a leg up on other Pats’ fans who might want a look at potentially one of their next signal callers.
In a Look Beyond the Top QB’s, NEPD’s Jeff Fidler broke down the strengths and weaknesses in White’s game, most of which you can probably assess before reading further.
Fidler says he likes the 6'4", 220 frame of White, likes his pre-snap reads and likes his “arm talent,” as well as accuracy.
The two main knocks on White are, again, probably obvious for those of us who watched White a lot: His pocket presence and his internal clock/pocket awareness.
But, in total, I think Fidler likes him, saying
White has plenty of tools to work with & improve upon. Looks the part & has battled through change & adversity. Coaches & teams will have to decide if he’s worth the gamble because he’s a slow processor. His lack of athleticism won’t change. He is who he is there. Has to be noted that Whites been through several system changes & a transfer so stability is something he’s never had. He could get the benefit of the doubt there. It’s very possible he could click with the right coaches & system after sitting for a year. White’s value is currently in the 3rd-early 4th round.
More recently (as in two days ago), the NEPD crew took a look at the QB’s as a whole, giving a long, overall assessment of White. Click here to read it all, but it reads in part,
White does have some intriguing skills. On the field, White shows a nice job of reading and taking advantage of what he sees. He is an accurate passer with a quick release and a strong arm to push the ball to all levels of the field. White moves well in the pocket, maintaining good balance and footwork to be able to make throws with defenders around him.
All that is followed by projecting a fourth-round grade for White.
When it was all said and done, in their latest Mock Draft Monday, neither Fidler or Mike Gerken foresaw White being selected by the Pats.
But, they did see Richie James being taken in the seventh round.
