As we draw nearer and nearer to the beginning of the 2016 NFL regular season, all 32 teams are having to make cuts to their preseason rosters to get down to the maximum of 75 players.
Unfortunately, yesterday a ProTopper was in the mix of the cuts, as Quanterus Smith was let go by the Detroit Lions.
Smith, who spent the 2015 season with the Jets and Jaguars on the practice squad after getting cut by the Denver Broncos in April of the same year, was signed by Detroit in late July. He was seen as a depth signing, but won’t begin the year with the Lions as a 75-man roster.
I know it’s preseason, but for what it’s worth, the Lions have posted the seventh best defensive unit in the league, allowing 280.3 yards per game in three preseason affairs. (Stats are via footballdb.com)
Here’s a positive thing of Q from earlier this preseason.
I’d be shocked if Q goes unclaimed for long, even if it means another practice squad stint.
