The Hilltopper great, and hometown kid for the Colts, Jack Doyle finished 2017 as the fourth-most targeted tight end in the NFL. Colts.com’s Jake Arthur says that isn’t only going to continue, but will probably improve.
Jack Doyle Was The Fourth-Most Targeted NFL Tight End in 2017
INDIANAPOLIS - For the first time in his professional career, Indianapolis Colts tight end Jack Doyle became a safety…www.colts.com
Arthur points out several things that I didn’t realize until reading (but those of you who are Indy fans will laugh at me for not realizing). One of those things was the fact that the Colts lost Andrew Luck three quarters into the year and Jacoby Brissett was thrown into the thick of things and, immediately, Doyle became the security blanket for him.
Doyle finished 2017 with 80 catches on 102 targets (the second most catches by TE’s in the league) for 690 yards and four touchdowns en route to his first ever Pro Bowl selection.
All that production came in Doyle’s first year as TE1, after Indy dealt Dwayne Allen, and Brissett obviously felt comfortable throwing to 84.
And, as Arthur points out, that’ll only improve: Incoming Colts head coach, former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich, is coming from an offense that won the Super Bowl by targeting their TE1 more than any other team in the league.
Now, this wont translate to a Super Bowl appearance for the Colts (regardless who is at QB, which at this point, I don’t even think Luck has begun to throw yet), but it might translate into even better numbers for Doyle, making him one of the most elite targets not just among tight ends, but in all of the NFL.
