The midway point of the 2021 NFL season started with a memorable bang. With playoff positioning knocking on the door of several teams, new life is beginning elsewhere amidst poor play, injuries, & preparing for the offseason. Let’s dive in to see how our beloved Hilltopper football alumni did in week 7.
Devon Key remains on the practice squad for the Chiefs. After being steamrolled by the Titans 27–3 on Sunday, you would think that Key would get a call up soon with the Chiefs' defensive woes continuing to plague them.
In AFC East play, the Jets traveled to Foxborough to face the Patriots. Zach Wilson left the game during the second quarter after going down on a play that involved his knee. Mike White finally got his chance on being the first WKU quarterback to appear in an NFL regular-season game.
ON THE FIRST PLAY, he threw for his first NFL career touchdown to Corey Davis.
Sadly, it was not enough as the Jets were demolished by the Pats 54–13. On the bright side, White made the most of a bad situation. He went 20 completions out of 32 pass attempts. He also threw for one touchdown & two interceptions. On Monday, the Jets announced that Zach Wilson will miss up to four weeks at the most on a knee injury.
In the next upcoming weeks, White will strongly become considered as the starter going forward. However, time will tell in the next few weeks if that promise remains true as the Jets traded for Joe Flacco to return to the Meadowlands.

Moving on to the late afternoon schedule, things are heating up on the west coast. The Rams were victorious as quarterback Matthew Stafford beats his old team the Lions, 28–19. Tyler Higbee was productive for another week as he caught five passes for 46 yards. He also averaged 9.2 yards a reception. The Rams are now reaping the spoils of a 6–1 record, remaining behind the Cardinals in the NFC West standings.
The Buccaneers beat the Bears 38–3. Deon Yelder caught his first reception of the season from Tom Brady but was quickly pushed back for no gain. He did play 11 snaps as he was on tight-end duties. Joel Iyiegbuniwe played on special teams/defense for the Bears. His snap counts increased as he was in for 24 plays.
Sunday Night in America was treated to a Colts 31–18 win over the 49ers on a rainy night in Santa Clara. Jack Doyle was targeted twice and played 54 snaps during the win. The Colts remain in second place in the AFC South.
Over the past week, Forrest Lamp saw another opportunity on playing in the NFL. The Saints signed him to the practice squad as they were loading up on offensive line depth.
