On Thursday night, the 2020 NFL Season got underway. After the Covid-19 pandemic shut down most of the sports world as we know it, the NFL bounced back with some changes of their own to make sure the players can play safely. This included the absence of preseason games and an abbreviated training camp. However, it still didn’t stop our beloved Hilltopper alumni from continuing their careers. Crowds in select stadiums allowed for at least 20 percent of total capacity. After a season to remember for free agency, the games have begun.
Fresh off of a Super Bowl title, Deon Yelder and the Kansas City Chiefs opened up the season versus the Houston Texans. He was not in action during the Chiefs 34–20 win.
Forrest Lamp was back in action after a long-awaited season of recovery from injury in 2019. He made his start on a shuffled Los Angeles Chargers offensive line at left guard. He totaled 74 snap counts in the 16–13 victory, spoiling Joe Burrow’s debut with the Cincinnati Bengals.
In the Meadowlands, Mike White and George Fant started the season dressing up with the New York Jets. White received some good news on Saturday as he was called up from the practice squad to back up Sam Darnold.

The Jets lost the to the Buffalo Bills 27–17 in a very uninspiring season debut. On the bright side, Fant hasn’t lost a step as he was impressive on the offensive line, accounting for 56 snap counts.
Taywan Taylor opened up his season on the practice squad for the Cleveland Browns. He was on the waiver wire until he was left unclaimed. Cleveland lost to the Baltimore Ravens, 38–6.
Joel Iyiegbuniwe recorded a combined tackle during the Chicago Bears 27–23 win over the Detroit Lions. He also remained on special teams duty, totaling 25 snap counts.
Jack Doyle’s Indianapolis Colts had a rough start to 2020. The Jacksonville Jaguars prevailed 27–20 in what seemed to be the only game that allowed fans in the stadium on Sunday. Doyle did catch the ball three times for 49 yards.
Last but not least, Tyler Higbee and the Los Angeles Rams made their SOFI Stadium debut in primetime on Sunday night. The spotlight was everything but glamorous as the Dallas Cowboys defense held him from continuing his late 2019 form. He only had three receptions for 40 yards in the Rams 20–17 win.
It was a quiet but eventful opening weekend for the #ProTops. Either way, we’re having an NFL season in 2020. More updates will follow week by week.
