George Fant was seen as one of the NFL’s up-and-comers in terms of lineman heading into the 2017 (or, at least, that’s what it seemed like on the outside looking into the ‘Hawks offensive line situation), but after tearing his ACL late in the 2017 preseason, he lost the year.
But, is it possible he lost more?
Analysis: Where does George Fant fit on Seahawks line?
The Seattle Seahawks, despite having one of the worst offensive lines in the league last year, only made minimal…seahawkswire.usatoday.com
As the above article notes, Fant’s old spot, at left tackle, is in good hands with Duane Brown, a Pro Bowler who was acquired midway through last year. But, that could mean a shift to right tackle to challenge Germain Ifedi, where CBS Sports and Our Lads already have Fant lined up as second string.
In doing some digging, I found some…unfavorable…stats regarding Fant’s first year as a member of the ‘Hawks offensive line; Pro Football Focus said he ranked the worst out of qualified starters at the tackle position and had a low blocking efficiency, but this is a dude getting his first snaps at the position while simultaneously playing his first season in the NFL.
The SeahawksWire article referenced notes that Seattle head coach Pete Carroll loves competition in practice, which is what put Fant in a position to be taking snaps on the O-Line in the first place as opposed to working with the tight ends.
The long story short here is if Fant beat out others in practice to be on the field before, he can do it again. And, if Fant does beat someone out for the starting job a second time, then I think he’ll have officially secured his place on, what many consider to be, the worst offensive line in the league. (I say that as a plus for Fant…I swear.)
