Fresh off the heels of a…well, abysmal weekend (and week, if you extend it out to the Kentucky loss), the Tops look to turn a new leaf as they head to Nashville to take on Belmont.
The Tops have already faced the Bruins once before this year and beat them 4–1 in the season opener at The Nick.
Since then, things haven’t gone swimmingly for the Tops, who have dropped five games in a row (although they did take three of four games from Northern Illinois before this losing streak began).
Last weekend against West Virgina, the Tops were outscored 25–15 and hit .255 as a team (which isn’t terrible) while surrendering a combined 6.43 ERA (which is kind of terrible).
Taking the bump for the Tops is southpaw Evan Acosta (0–0, 3.38), who turned in a gem in his last start against Kentucky, allowing just three hits across six shutout innings.
Acosta also started the last matchup against Belmont, but only pitched one inning (that was the game JP opted to use a different pitcher in every inning).
Since falling to the Tops back on Feb. 20, the Bruins have dropped six of their last seven outings, with the lone win coming in the form ofa 25–9 demolishing of Fairleigh Dickinson at the Southern Athletic Field Classic (after dropping a 17–3 game to Kent St. the night before).
For the Bruins, it’ll be lefty Justin Fowlkes (0–2, 2.70) taking the bump, who also started the last time these two squads faced one another. Last time out against the Tops, Fowlkes allowed two runs on four hits in five innings, taking his first loss of the season.
I feel confident in saying, if there was a time the Tops needed to get on the right track, this is the time.
The Tops open a nine-game home stand following tonight’s game, and it’d be great to start that with a win under their belt.
First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
