We are essentially in the home stretch of the collegiate baseball season. The Hilltoppers have just 14 games left — four conference series and two midweek games — as they’re looking to punch their ticket to the Conference USA baseball tournament for the first time since joining the league.
If the season ended today, 14 games early, the Tops would be in that tournament as the #6 seed. WKU is locked in a three-way tie for fifth in the standings, along with Charlotte and UAB.
But, first thing is first, and that’s to square off against a red hot La Tech team who swept Marshall on the road last weekend and recently saw a five-game winning streak snap in a mid-week defeat to Louisiana-Lafayette.
So, what’s at stake for the Tops this weekend?
The series will begin with a five-game winning streak for the Bulldogs. A win will end that, and the Tops have yet to be swept in a conference series this year *knocks on extreme wood*
A single win would give WKU their most conference wins since they went 10–20 in 2016. If they can get two wins, it’ll be the most wins since they had 11 in 2014, when they went 15–15 in Sun Belt play.
Offense might be hard to come by for the Tops this weekend, as La Tech has the fourth-best ERA in the nation.
Scoreboard watching: Charlotte is at Rice, so they should pick up at least two wins while UAB heads to FAU, which could go either way but’ll most likely be an FAU series victory. The team in fourth place in the conference, UTSA, is at MT, who is in third-from-last place entering this weekend.
First pitch is at 6 p.m. tonight, and then 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday.
