With just two days remaining before the deadline to declare for the draft, WKU fans finally got the news they have been waiting for as Center Charles Bassey announced that he’ll be declaring for the 2019 NBA Draft:
As you can see in the announcement, Bassey has decided to not sign with an agent. Bassey didn’t take advantage of the new rule change, where a player can sign with an agent and still return to school. By not signing with an agent this greater opens up the door for him to return to the Tops for the 2019–20 season. This move was the expectation all along as it doesn’t hurt Bassey at all to find out where his stock is at and get feedback on what he needs to improve upon should he decide to return. Here is the timeline for him to make his ultimate decision:
Bassey’s draft projections have been all over the board over the past month but most prognosticators put Bassey out of the first round. He’ll have a decision to make by June 10th on whether or not if that projection is good enough for him to leave or if he wants to return to the Hill and build upon his Conference USA freshman of the year campaign (14.6 points/game, 10 rebounds/game and 2.4 blocks/game). Bassey will only be 19 next season (same age as next year’s freshman) so he’s wouldn’t be sacrificing as much as some older players do by coming back. Bassey is currently using WKU’s 13th scholarship, should he leave they will have 1–2 scholarships available for next season. We’ll keep you posted on any news that arises and will be releasing a roundup of Bassey’s draft stock next week, Stay tuned.
