Despite it being April Fool’s Day, some serious news to report. It looks like star center Charles Bassey will be going pro.
According to the article, Bassey will be hiring an agent and said “I’m completely going into this one for sure” leaving no doubt this is the end of his college career.
Bassey was a five star recruit coming out of high school and was a force at WKU averaging 15.9 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks in his Hilltopper career. He won a slew of awards in his time from Conference USA Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year as well as being in national All-American teams and was a 2 time Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Finalist.
In my opinion, this is a no-brained decision, especially after his leg injury in 2019.
When looking at his pro potential, Bassey definitely has the size, athleticism, and wing span to play in the NBA and is a projected late first round to early second round draft pick according to various sites. He’s a strong defensive player and shot blocker and is pretty quick for someone that’s 6”11’ as well.
While it’s sad seeing Bassey go, we can all be thankful he chose WKU to be his college home for three seasons. Never in my life would I ever imagine the Tops landing a five star recruit on the Hill, especially one that stays for three years. Bassey off the court is an incredibly smart student and soft spoken guy who always seemed so humble and down to earth every time I got to interact with him.
All of us at The Towel Rack are happy for him and look forward to covering his pro career
