On Wednesday, WKU freshman center Charles Bassey was invited to next week’s NBA Draft Combine in Chicago.
With his audition for the league next week, here’s what the temperature is on Bassey in mock drafts:
NBADraft.net: 19th overall to San Antonio
DraftSite.com: 45th overall to Boston (projected trade from Oklahoma City)
Heavy.com: 33rd overall to Philadelphia
ESPN.com: 53rd overall to Utah
NBCSports.com: 26th overall to Cleveland. “ Bassey is an interesting two-way prospect. He swatted 2.4 shots per game while averaging a double-double with 14.6 points and 10 rebounds. There’s even a hint of a perimeter shot. That he’s a bit raw has kept the 6-foot-10 center’s ranking often outside the top 30.”
WalterFootball.com (ed. note — why is a football site mock-drafting hoops?): 30th overall to Milwuakee. “Bassey reclassified to the 2018 class and has all the physical attributes to be an effective low post player, but he also can step out and face up. Milwaukee dealt Thon Maker before the trade deadline and could lose Brook Lopez in free agency, so the roster could use options inside.”
Tankathon.com: 47th overall to Sacramento
The Athletic: 60th overall to Sacramento. “ Bassey is a tough prospect to peg right now. He was productive this season, but doesn’t really roll hard toward the basket and finish far above the rim. His mobility away from the basket also gives teams pause as to whether or not he’ll just get pulled away and taken advantage of by NBA guards. But his touch and rim protection make him intriguing for teams, at least.”
As you can see, there’s not a ton of consensus with where Bassey might land (which is partially why there’s so much chatter among WKU fans that he’ll be returning for a second lap on the Hill).
Next week will give him a chance to show his stuff in front of the bosses but will also give him some feed back on 1.) where his game is and 2.) where his draft stock stands from the inside.
