Despite a momentum-killing regular season-ending loss to UTSA, awild last day of pod play helped WKU clinch the number two seed for the Conference USA tournament in Frisco, Texas. On Saturday night, the league released the bracket
The Tops will start their quest for a Conference USA Tournament title on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. CT. They will face the winner of FIU & North Texas.
During the regular season, the Tops had mixed results against each team with the shocking loss to the Panthers at home and escaping Denton with a three-point victory. If the Tops play UNT they’ll have to overcome a local fan advantage as Denton is just 25 miles from Frisco.
With the shakedown on Saturday, the Tops will get an easier path than anticipated after Wednesday’s loss. They will get to avoid potential matchups against ODU and UTSA until the finals. If they survive their quarterfinal matchup, the Tops will probably play the winner of Southern Miss (2–0 on the season) and Marshall (1–1 on the season), arguably the two hottest teams in the conference.
If this season has shown us anything, Conference USA is the most wide-open league in the country. WKU (18–13) has had a very disappointing regular season but still ended up as a two seed and has the most talent in the league with a favorable path to the tournament finals. They’ll have to overcome the demons they’ve faced all season including poor shooting, lapses in focus and turnovers but anything is possible especially since they only have to string three games together.
The Towel Rack will be in Frisco providing coverage of WKU’s quest for their first NCAA tournament bid since 2013 (way too long). A frustrating season can be instantly redeemed with a championship and the promise of this team can be fulfilled. Whatever happens, the Tops for sure won’t be boring.
