In a surprising announcement just mere hours away from the tournament in Frisco, Texas continuing, Conference USA officials announce that the conference tournament will be canceled due to the recent outbreak of Coronavirus.
C-USA will be following along with other conferences such as the Big 10, MAC, SEC, and countless others by not having their conference tournament. Despite some games already being held yesterday and more games initially to be held today without fans, C-USA will potentially give their bid to North Texas for the NCAA Tournament (that is if it is even held at this point).
This is definitely a bitter way for the season to end but public health concerns are more important than games being held. Even the NBA has suspended the rest of their season after players from the Utah Jazz tested positive for COVID-19 causing their whole team and the Oklahoma City Thunder to both be quarantined after the game.
Had WKU beaten North Texas (man those missed free throws by Taveion Hollingsworth really sting) just a little over a week ago they would’ve won the regular-season title? While it would’ve been a nice accolade to have (since WKU hasn’t won a regular-season conference title since 2009) if the NCAA Tournament does, in fact, get canceled in the coming days it definitely wouldn’t feel the same or mean as much as it would normally.
As much as a bummer this is not only for fans but the players and coaches, it’s best to keep everyone healthy and in WKU’s case, to prepare for next season with a healthy Charles Bassey.
