Western Kentucky basketball newcomer Jamorion Sharp made headlines around the WKU and C-USA Twitterverse on Monday when the WKU basketball account tweeted this when listing their new players for the coming year:
That height — seven foot five — caught some folks' eyes.
Some Twitter sleuths deduced that Sharp was listed at a measly 7'3" while at JUCO John A Logan last year, where he averaged 7.5 points and 7.4 rebounds in 22 games.
WKU hoops Sports Information Director, Zach Greenwell, then chimed in to attempt to set things straight.
So, officially 7'5" entering the 2021/22 season, up three inches from last year?
Let’s see.
A quick Google search tells me the traditional door is 80 inches tall, or 6.6 feet. I think the doors in Diddle are a tad taller, so let's call them eight feet. Let’s also give a couple of feet for the door frame and the doorway, making for a 10-foot entryway.
Let's also assume that in the video above from Mr. Greenwell, there’s half a foot of space between Sharp’s head and the top of the metal part of the entryway. He’s also riding on a hoverboard while wearing flip-flops: that’s four and a half added inches off the ground to his supposed 7'5" frame.
So, a 7'5" man, plus 4.5 inches (7'9.5") goes through a 10-foot opening and has about half a foot of room to do so.
However, Sharp does duck to get through the doorway (I argue he doesn’t have to, but he still does), losing four inches on his way through (7'5.5").
Not only is, based on our maths, WKU correctly reporting his height, they might be underreporting it.
It should be fun to watch him terrorize fools in the paint.
