Savage played high school ball at Warren Central and averaged 18 points and 9.4 rebounds per game and signed with Austin Peay. In his two year career as a Governor, he averaged 8.1 points and 3.6 rebounds and shot 37% from deep.
During his time as a Governor, he also helped them win an OVC championship and went with them to the Big Dance as a #16 seed where they faced (and lost to) #1 Kansas.
Savage has been on WKU’s roster since last season but had to sit out the 2017–2018 season due to NCAA transfer rules so he’s had a full season to learn and develop in Stansbury’s system as well as work on all his fundamentals. He even got to go with Moustapha Diagne to Belize with the Sports Reach program and participated in some games with them down there this past May.
Now in 2018, he is now going to be eligible to play for the Tops and that time couldn’t come any sooner for WKU.
Savage will become a vital person in Stansbury’s rotation very fast due to his athleticism and shooting ability. I personally see Savage being the first man off the bench and becoming a leader over younger players such as Banton and Gambrell. He has starter potential, but with Bearden coming back, I see him coming off the bench. Either way, he still has the potential to put up big numbers off the bench and become a core player.
Savage should fit nicely at the wing, but as a two guard most of the time depending on if he and Trevelin Queen play at the same time. Stansbury will have limitless options with his rotations now that he has a full roster of 14+ players but Savage is the type of versatile player that can be useful in many situations.
Regardless of how Stansbury actually ends up using him, he will still be a vital player on his roster next season and will give WKU some leadership and experience that can help them win close game situations. His life journey has brought him back to his home in Bowling Green and I imagine he’s ready to make the most of this opportunity at WKU.
