At 6'0 and 150 pounds, WKU gets a quick and stealthy guard with deep shooting range that the Tops desperately need. Let’s meet Houston Madison’s Jeremiah Gambrell Jr.
Jeremiah Gambrell, Madison , Point Guard
jeremiah gambrell is a 6-0, 150-pound Point Guard from Houston, TX.247sports.com
Gambrell is a three-star recruit according to 247Sports but was considered a high-end prospect in the state of Texas as a sophomore in high school. He almost ended up in the Big XII originally after he committed to Baylor early on in his recruiting process.
Stansbury has deep recruiting connections to the Lonestar State and caught wind of this talented guard who has been averaging around 20 points per game since he was a sophomore and was able to convince him to come play at the Hill next season. Here’s a short video on Gambrell by Houston’s KHOU 11 News:
Personally, I think Gambrell is the most underrated player coming to the Hill in Stansbury’s class of 2018. His roster will still be guard heavy with other new talented guards such as Dalano Banton and Jared Savage but Gambrell has the talent and work ethic to come in and compete.
Gambrell is more of a point guard in the traditional sense so I would imagine Stansbury would keep him there. He can make the deep three-point shots that were missing from WKU last season but he also has the quickness to drive to the basket and either get an easy layup or draw the foul. His three-point range extends to almost NBA range so having his lethal shooting will keep defenses on their toes.
While I still see him being behind Bearden off the bench at point guard, I still think it’s possible for him to work his way up as the season progresses. He has a tremendous work ethic and if he makes the most of his minutes with some big threes, he has the potential to be a vital part of WKU’s offense the next few years.
