Former Western Kentucky forward Justin Johnson has a new team, momentarily, as the has been announced as a member of the West Virginia Wildcats who will compete in The Basketball Tournament this summer.
Johnson averaged 16.5 points and 9.3 rebounds over 28 games (27 starts) this past season for Cagliari Dinamo Academy in Italy who went 10–19 this year. Johnson led the team in boards while finishing second in points and minutes (32.1) and third in blocks (0.5).
WV Wildcats call themselves “A group of guys from the Mountain State,” but Johnson obviously bucks that trend though Hazard is a four and a half-hour drive to the WV border so…I’ll take it?
Anyway, TBT is a tournament we here at The Towel Rack are quite familiar with. Jeremy Evans joined the Eberlein Drive during last year’s tournament, who fell in the Championship to the Overseas Elite despite Evans leading the game with 12 rebounds.
The Wildcats saw an early exit last year, winning a play-in game before getting eliminated in the first round as a 16/1 game to the Scarlet & Gray (who went onto the quarterfinals in Atlanta).
This year’s TBT runs from July 19 — August 6 where the tournament will finish in Chicago for a $2 million winner-take-all purse. For more on The Tournament, click here.
TBT will be comprised of teams from all over the world and not every team that applies will be accepted. We’ll find out if the Wildcats make the field of 64 on June 11.
