It was our first (preseason) look at the Hilltoppers tonight as they hosted HBCU Kentucky State and the Tops sure did show up. Four Hilltoppers scored ten or more points as they cruised past the Thorobreds by fourty, 85–45.
Carson Williams scored a team high 18 points and ten rebounds as Charles Bassey logs a double-double as well scoring 16 points and ten rebounds. Camron Justice and Josh Anderson looked sharp as well, Justice with 11 points and Anderson with 14.
Coach Stansbury started Taveion Hollingsworth, Camron Justice, Jared Savage, Carson Williams, and Charles Bassey tonight. Not sure if that will be their official starting lineup for now (until Kenny Cooper is hopefully cleared) but it seemed to work well. Hollingsworth struggled tonight and was only 1-of-7 from the court and had five points.
Some of the biggest surprises were Carson Williams and Josh Anderson. Williams absolutely dominated and gave me some Justin Johnson flashbacks with the way he played. Early in the second half he went on a tear and scored on five straight possessions. Anderson owned up to the bench role (for now) and didn’t let that stop him. He still came out and played well and got some of his signature breakaway dunks including some nice putback dunks.
The freshmen struggled a little more with Jordan Rawls getting eight points but shot 4-of-12 from the court and Isaiah Cozart fouled a bunch and only had two points and five missed free throws. Their presence was still felt and the more playing time and confidence they get the better.
Seeing the Tops get a huge blowout win is exciting. Sure it’s an exhibition game against a not very good school but I remember a time seeing WKU only beat NAIA teams by only 10–15 points instead of 40. It’s good to see this level of domination this early. Their first real game will be Tuesday night against Tennessee Tech and I’m hoping to see this level of domination once again. It would be nice to see that become a consistent thing this season.
