WKU Basketball: Tops Extend Win Streak to Six Games Against Charlotte, 77-67
Tops are in third place of the East of C-USA after defeating the same team that kickstarted their six game win streak
Western Kentucky shot 55% from the floor and 57% from deep as they take down the Charlotte 49ers for the second time this season, 77-67.
Dayvion McKnight shined once again tonight with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting with five assists as he continues to lead the Hilltoppers in scoring on the year. Camron Justice shot well from deep and had 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting from behind the arc with seven assists. Jairus Hamilton had 15 points and shot 75% (3-of-4) from deep and Luke Frampton added nine points as well. Jamarion Sharp didn’t score much (only four points) but had seven rebounds and four blocks.
Charlotte was led by Austin Butler in scoring with 21 points and their star guard Jahmir Young, who struggled in the first half, still added 18 points.
This game was mostly led by the Tops throughout the whole game other than the first seven minutes when WKU took the lead but once it was in the Tops’ favor, they never trailed again.
WKU led at halftime 47-36 and with a couple of runs thanks to Jahmir Young, Charlotte were able cut into the Tops’ lead and got within two points when it was 59-57 but thankfully the Tops were able to hold off their best efforts and close it out, 77-67.
This game is the sixth game the Tops have won in a row after losing to MTSU at the end of January. After that loss WKU was 10-11 overall and 2-5 in conference play and a lot of us thought this team was done.
But thankfully they’ve proved us wrong and after some much needed wins, now sit at 16-11 overall and 8-5 in C-USA play. Obviously these games weren’t all pretty wins and there are things that we wish we would see (like Stansbury use his bench) but ultimately the best way to shut the naysayers up is to win and they have.
WKU now prepare for Old Dominion, who they just beat by 17 in Norfolk a couple of weeks ago, at home as they look to inch closer to getting a first round bye in the C-USA Tournament less than a month away in March.
