WKU Basketball: Tops Receive Verbal Commitment From Texas Point Guard
The day after Hilltopper Hysteria, WKU received a verbal commitment from a 2018 Texas PG.
The day after Hilltopper Hysteria, WKU received a verbal commitment from a 2018 Texas PG.
Up until earlier this week, Gambrell was a Baylor commit, but that changed because…reasons?
When Gambrell did commit to the Bears, Baylor247 said this about him as a player:
Jeremiah Gambrell is a name that is not on the national radar yet. He’s a 6–0 guard from Houston (Madison) who is one of the top scorers in the high school ranks and is only an incoming junior. Last year, he averaged over 20 points per game as a sophomore. He has a quick release on his jumper and is accurate from NBA range. But he is also a guard that can score off the bounce and create for teammates. He’s not playing a lot of AAU ball this summer which may not give those who do the national rankings an opportunity to see him.
Despite the high praise, he’s ranked a two-star player on the Verbal Commits ranking system and I honestly couldn’t find a Rivals or 247Sports ranking for him.
Scout.com’s Evan Daniels got a quick quote from him a few minutes after his commitment.
Hard to disagree with that logic.
After watching that highlight tape (albeit it as short and old as it is), a couple of things are immediately apparent — he is every bit that listed 6'0", and he may even be actually shorter than that. Also, he has a big, looping arc on his jump shot and his passes zip to where they want to go.
His full highlight reel from last season can be found below.
This one shows less of his passing, and his defense seems more due to opportunity and hustle than pure defensive skill (whatever that really means) but I’m incredibly excited to have his jumpshot come to the Hill.
It appears as though Gambrell might just be a highly overlooked prospect and the Tops might be getting a sneaky good player. Baylor has that recent basketball success (off-court issues aside) so there must be something there.
Gambrell is the second commit to the Tops’ 2018 class, along with forward Matthew Horton of Shelton State Community College.
