As we said yesterday, this game is not going to mirror the first contest at all. At least, it shouldn’t. The Herd will be at full strength unless Ajdin Penava leaves early due to injury again, and they’re going to want extreme vengeance after WKU did what they did on the Herd’s home floor.
I think somehow lost in the anticipation for tonight is the vengeance that (I hope) the Tops will come out and play with after losing to MT. There was no shame in the way they lost — if you’ll remember, I even said they really had no business being as close or competitive in that game as late as it got.
Hopefully, playing with vengeance (on the Tops’ side) will mean playing smarter, more patient and a bit luckier and not forcing things to work immediately, which is going to lead to a ton of missed shots and most likely transition points. Never a good thing.
On paper, this matchup scares me, but that’s because I’m a simpleton and I see how dangerous the trio of Penava, Jon Elmore and C.J. Burks are on the stat sheet and freak out.
It’ll be an interesting experiment to see how WKU handles playing a team for the second time in a season for the first time this season. I hope Darius Thompson is feeling like his old self, and I’d love to see another Josh Anderson coming out party. If he gets hot, can you imagine how hype that Diddle crowd is going to get?
