Seniors Darius Thompson, Dwight Coleby, and Justin Johnson played their last game in Diddle Arena tonight as the Tops cruised past C-USA foe Old Dominion 88–66 in front of a sold out crowd of 7,387. Thompson and Coleby had 11 points while Johnson finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Hollingsworth led WKU in scoring with 20 points.
It was a night full of emotions as the seniors played their last game in Diddle and were honored before the game but even more so for Johnson, who proposed to his longtime girlfriend at mid-court (she said yes by the way).
Johnson played with his heart on his sleeve and came straight out the gate scoring a quick 7 points to help WKU get off to a 13–4 start early in the first. WKU would never relinquish the lead and led the entire game and were up by as many as 28 points.
This game was one of WKU’s most complete games they’ve had in recent memory. Old Dominion are NOT an easy team to beat. They’re also in the top three teams in the C-USA with an overall record of 22–5 going into tonight but WKU seemed to handle them pretty easily on the offensive end and shot 59% and held their own on defense too. ODU shot 44% for the game but had 11 turnovers and were never able to overcome an incredibly slow start.
This win will make WKU 14–2 in the C-USA and 22–7 overall as they head to Murfreesboro to take on the #24 team in the country and current top dog in the C-USA Middle Tennessee State on Thursday. The 100 Miles of Hate is always a chippy and close rivalry game but the things at stake for this game are extremely high for both teams so it definitely won’t disappoint.
But as for WKU, they’re starting to gather momentum at the most crucial part of the season and if they can play this well going into the Conference USA tournament in Texas, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
