WKU Basketball: Tops Win Seventh In a Row Against ODU, 73-64
The W’s keep on coming and the Tops have worked their way to second place in the East of C-USA
Western Kentucky won their seventh game in a row tonight as they beat the Old Dominion Monarchs, 73-64.
Dayvion McKnight shined once again with a 23 point performance with seven rebounds with 17 of those points in the first half. Cam Justice and Luke Frampton didn’t exactly shoot too well tonight but Justice still finished with 13 points and Frampton finished with 11 points. Jamarion Sharp struggled with fouls tonight and eventually fouled out but he still had eight points, ten rebounds, and four blocks before fouling out.
The biggest concern moving forward for WKU is that Jairus Hamilton suffered an injury to his right knee in the first half. He did not return to the game in the second half. He still had seven points before leaving the game about midway through the first half and his status moving forward isn’t known yet but we’re hoping for a speedy recovery. Thankfully Josh Anderson was able to step up off the bench and play his minutes and had 11 points.
Thankfully in this game the Tops were able to start off blazing hot. WKU started the game on a 12-2 run and looked great on both ends as they led at halftime, 44-30.
In the second half, WKU eventually extended their lead to 20 points but ODU were able to fight back, mostly due to some bad shooting on the Tops end, and cut the lead to just five points. Despite a little bit of a letdown in the second half, the Tops were still able to hold them off and win their seventh straight game, 73-64 .
It’s still amazing to see how this team has done in these last seven games. They’ve now gone from being 2-5 in C-USA to being second place in the East at 9-5 and if the season ended now, they would have the first round bye. But sadly, they still have some more games to go before the C-USA Tournament begins in March and I just hope they don’t exhaust all their efforts now and burn out before then.
Until then, we’re gonna enjoy these wins and continue to watch this young team grow.
Final stats from Diddle Arena:
C-USA needs some new officials. They are the bottom of the barrel.
