We learned today, via multiple reports, that JUCO guard Trevelin Queen is no longer a member of the WKU Basketball team and is no longer enrolled at the university either.
While a lot still remains unclear, we have heard some rumors that he was dismissed from the team due to disciplinary issues but that has not been confirmed by the team at this time. We will provide official updates when made available.
Regardless of the reason, his loss will mean a few different things for the the team.
Queen wasn’t going to be someone that would come in and start but he was a valuable wing player that shot from 35% from three his last season at New Mexico Military Institute as a sophomore. He was considered by many to be one of the best NJCAA players in his class last season, averaging 26 points per game.
I personally had Queen being Jared Savage’s backup at small forward next season but Stansbury will have many different options to explore losing him. Thankfully, Stansbury has plenty of guards to choose from on his roster to chose from including Dalano Banton. Even though Banton has usually played at the point, he stands at 6’8" and weighs 190 pounds, so he could be a viable option to extend to the wing if need be.
One other thing to take into consideration with Queen no longer being on the team is the scholarship situation. With him included, WKU had 16 players on their roster with one of them (that we know of at the time) being a walk-on. We don’t know who is and who isn’t on full scholarship as of now and when asked on Twitter about it, WKBO’s Chad Bishop had this intriguing response:
With Queen leaving, that puts the roster at 15 players overall with two of them being walk-ons. We know newly added guard Patrick Murphy is walking onto the team but we don’t know who the other one is.
Queen is the first player and only player from this year’s class and WKU’s roster in general that they weren’t able to keep going into the year. This is the first season in a long time that WKU didn’t have a single player from last year on their roster transfer during the offseason. Stansbury has been able to retain most of his players outside of isolated situations like this (and also an AWOL Mitchell Robinson that most of us have forgotten about by now, thankfully).
In today’s age of college basketball, players come and go but losing a player once they get to campus and involved with the team is always a shame but overall WKU should be able to continue on with the pieces they have to what should be another exciting year of college basketball on the Hill.
