I thought I had a brilliant idea for an article today — will all the excitement regarding next year with the addition of former Auburn forward Desean Murray, what will the next year look like, especially after it was announced former NKU forward Carson Williams is heading to the Hill as well.
Then, this tweet came across my timeline.
Case closed. *brushes hands together*
Just kidding. Lets take a bit of a deeper look.
Next offseason will see the exits of Lamonte Bearden (assuming he returns next year after putting his name in the early entries for the NBA Draft), and the aforementioned Murray, who’ll be another rental. That’s essentially a best-case scenario, as a whole lot is going to stay for 2019/20.
Potential returnees in two years will be Taveion Hollingsworth, Josh Anderson, Mareek Nelson (assuming he doesn’t transfer this offseason, which might be possible), Jake Ohmer (same as Nelson), all of which would be juniors, and Moustapha Diagne who would be gearing up for his final season.
Then you’ll have year two for Dalano Banton, Jeremiah Gambrell and Galen Smith as well as the final year for Matthew Horton and Trevelin Queen, who come in next year from the JUCO ranks.
On paper, this team has all of the talent in the world and should make any WKU fan excited for what the future might hold.
This doesn’t even take into consideration a team that’ll feature Charles Bassey on the floor as the Tops’ main big, nor guys like Dekeyvan Tandy, Terry Armstrong, Kira Lewis or any of the other 13 offers (Bassey excluded from that count) that the Tops have extended to players in the 2019 class.
It also doesn’t include the possibility of people leaving early. If Taveion has a year next year like he did this year, will he enter the draft early? If Josh Anderson has himself a monster year, does he leave early?
Even with those two departures, there’s enough here to keep your appetite for the future wet, which is crazy to think about even this time this past offseason.
