WKU Fans Aren’t Dumb — In Fact, They’re Kind Of Right

Yesterday, our pals at the Moonshine Throwdown went back to their roots in a way, with a good old fashion “Like for X, Retweet for Y” poll, pitting something WKU related against something Marshall related.
A pretty legendary tandum for either side, although one seems to have a bit more name recognition than the other.
HOWEVER, look at that total. LOOK AT THOSE NUMBERS.
That’s correct. WKU fans made their voices Her…heard, and decided they’d rather trust the Chrome Domes over Penningotn & Moss.
Reactions were, passionate, to say the least.
And that is just literally scratching the surface.
Damn, Moonshine. That’s awesome. Throw some of that love and attention our way, why don’t ya.
Back to the topic on hand — as you can see from the tweets above, and from what I saw from the tweets I didn’t include, there seemed to be a consensus — WKU fans are dumb, ignorant and don’t understand their football history.

However, here’s the thing.

It honestly isn’t that far out of the question — if you take a look at purely stats accumulated at the college level, WKU fans have a solid case.
We’ll take a look at the easier discrepancy — Moss vs. Taylor.
Yes, Randy Moss had a hell of a career with the Thundering Herd, totaling over 3,500 receiving yards, and 54 touchdowns.
However, Taywan didn’t lag too far behind in either category either — he totaled 3,197 receiving yards his junior and senior years, and totaled 34 touchdowns in that time as well.
Imagine if Taylor didn’t have a receiving corps as deep as WKU had (Nicholas Norris, Antwane Grant, Tyler Higbee, Jared Dangerfield just to name a few) how much higher those numbers could be.
Alright, you ready for the numbers that’ll REALLY anger the Herd?
Chad Pennington was the starting QB at Marshall for three years, just like Brandon Doughty. He totaled 11,446 passing yards, including a career-best 3,830 yards in 1998. Penningotn also threw for 107 total touchdowns, compared to 30 interceptions.
Doughty, while on the WKU roster for more than a lifetime (that’s the only Doughty Age joke I’ll make), was also a starting QB for three years. In those three years, Doughty more yards (12,742) and touchdowns (111) than Pennington.
In a year-by-year breakdown, Doughty only threw for fewer yards in a year than Pennington ever did once, in 2013, when a fella by the name of Antonio Andrews roamed the WKU backfield.

Yes, Pennington and Moss had unbelievable careers at Marshall, and went on to incredible professional careers as well, but the stats speak for themselves. Doughty a better quarterback and Taylor not far behind.
Or, if you don’t care about the stats, the Moonshine crew put it best.
The tweet didn’t say “which duo is better,” but rather asked who you’d rather have to make a clutch play.
So, long story short, WKU fans were right, and Marshall fans are clouded by professional achievement outside of the college game.
