WKU Football: Austin Reed Withdraws Name From Transfer Portal, Stays With Tops
One of the nation’s top passers is staying in Bowling Green
After being listed as one of the top transfers in the country, Austin Reed decided to take his name out of the portal and stay at Western Kentucky.
Reed threw for 4,247 yards, 36 TDs with only 10 INTs, and had a QBR of 66.2 his first season at WKU after transferring from University of West Florida.
Reed was listed as one of the top quarterbacks in the transfer portal when he put his name in but after testing the waters he realized that maybe the grass isn’t greener and that he has a good thing here at WKU.
The timing of this decision is interesting as well. It was announced a few hours earlier today that Purdue hired Illinois DC Ryan Walters as their next head coach. It was rumored beforehand that Tyson Helton was a candidate for that job and with that door being closed it looks like Helton and Reed will be back at WKU for another season together. Whether or not Reed’s decision was influenced by any of this is just pure speculation.
With Reed’s decision, another thing we have to remember is that the other players that have put their name in the portal could withdraw it at some point as well. Almost 20 players from WKU have put their name in the transfer portal so with their starting quarterback returning will that make some of them change their mind and stay? I sure hope so but only time will tell.
We have been keeping up with all of the roster additions and losses on our 2023 roster tracker which can be found here. WKU will now prepare for the New Orleans Bowl next week with their starting quarterback on board for next season.
