WKU Football: Bowl Season — Initial Thoughts
Championship week is upon us and for the first time in a couple of years, WKU is not apart of those champ week conversatoins.
Championship week is upon us and for the first time in a couple of years, WKU is not apart of those champ week conversatoins.
Instead, the conversation around WKU is much different and much less pleasant — will WKU be invited to a bowl game?
Before we dive too deep (Ross is going to have at least one, perhaps multiple, articles on WKU’s bowl chances and who their duking it out with for spots) into all of the reading of projections, balancing out the possibilities and everything that comes along with bowl watching, here are my initial thoughts on WKU’s bowl hopes.
I have no earthly idea what impact this makes on the Tops’ chances, but they were the seventh team to achieve bowl eligibility from C-USA, and they have the head-to-head win against Middle Tennessee. Do either of those things make a difference? I’d like to hope, but I don’t think so.
On Sunday there were three prominent bowl projections — CBS Sports (no bowl), SBNation (Tops in Hawaii) and Athlon Sports (Tops to Birmingham). If that ratio continues as more and more publications release their lists, I like the Tops’ odds. However, I’m aware that it doesn’t confirm the Tops to a bowl game, but it’s a good sign if enough people think they’ll make it.
Still jumping off those two projections above — either one of them is a good place for the Tops to go: Hawaii is the only bowl played on Christmas Eve this year, and I don’t know about you all, but when my family gathers after the Christmas Eve service, we all head home for dinner and the game is on in the background. Birmingham is a good spot as well — while not ideal in time slot (one of three games and a noon kick), it’s a close enough distance where WKU fans could travel and make a good showing. However, the one thing I wouldn’t be okay with is if WKU’s Birmingham opponent is who Athlon projected — a Top 25 Memphis team (who the Tops would play for a second straight year).
One C-USA bowl is out of the picture for WKU — UAB is going to the Bahamas.
We’ll, of course, have a lot more information as the week progresses and we learn more about who is going wear, be it official or officially unofficial (Brett McMurphy is notorious for breaking bowl matchups before they’re officially announced).

Well, it appears the Lady Tops have caught a break in terms of their travel for the NCAA tournament, as they found out…medium.com
Also, if you ever miss one of our bowl stories, we have a brand-new Bowl Watch: 2017 hub for you to check out, so you’ll never be out of the loop.
It’ll be a hectic week but hopefully we’ll all be happy when we learn the Tops’ fate (and by “all be happy,” I mean, “WKU is going to be bowling).
