With Spring practice set to start in just a few weeks, WKU Football received news that a new quarterback will enter the open competition for the starting job as former Arkansas starting quarterback, Ty Storey announced that he’ll grad transfer to the Hill
The 6 2'’ 215 lb, Chesterton, Arkansas native was a four-star recruit coming out of high school. Storey was a career back up that appeared in just four games before 2018. Last year in Chad Morris’s debut season (2–10), Storey appeared in 10 of Arkansas’s 12 games. He passed for 1584 yards (57.2 completion %) with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also showed some mobility, rushing for 146 yards and a touchdown. He split time with Cole Kelley and Connor Noland but was by far the most consistent quarterback on a bad Arkansas team. Here are his stats from 2018
Storey probably saw the writing was on the wall when Arkansas added former SMU quarterback Ben Hicks a few months back. According to Brad Stephens at the Bowling Green Daily News, Storey will look to join WKU for Spring practice during the fourth practice on March 18th.
He joins a crowded quarterback competition that includes 2018 starters Steven Duncan & Davis Shanley as well as former four-star quarterback, Kevaris Thomas. None of the returnees separated themselves in 2018 so I can see why Helton decided to bring Storey in. While competition is a good thing, I think it would be better for WKU’s future if one of the returnees wins the job. They’ll be here beyond 2019 and would bring experience and continuity to a WKU moving forward especially since WKU could peak in 2020 & 2021. If Storey gives WKU the best chance to win in 2019, I'm all for it. Should he win the job he’ll get a chance at revenge against his old team when WKU travels to Fayetteville on November 9th.
