Last Week
WKU headed down I-65 South to take on Vanderbilt in Nashville. The Tops evened the game at 14 right before the half but Vanderbilt drove down the field and scored on a deflected pass to head into the locker room down 21–14 at the half. White drove the Tops down the field to start the half but had to settle for a field goal to trail 21–17. It was all Commodores from there as Trent Sherfield broke a 45 yard run and Vanderbilt’s defense repeatedly sacked White in a 31–17 loss.
Marshall traveled to Florida Atlantic for a Friday night clash of eastern division front runners. The Herd fell behind 16–3 heading into the half. They then rallied with two third quarter touchdowns to tie it at 16. From there Devin Singletary once again carried the Owls to victory with a pair of touchdown runs. The Herd would make it respectable but fell to the Owls 30–25.
Coaches
Mike Sanford — 1st season, 5–4 overall

Last Meeting
During the final week of the 2016 regular season, WKU traveled to Huntington for senior night. Marshall’s season was already at a disappointing 3–8 tailspin heading into the game. To add insult to injury, Doc Holliday suspended starting quarterback Chase Litton for that game. WKU promptly went into Huntington and made quick work of the Herd jumping out to a 48–0 lead while putting a demoralizing end to Marshall’s season with a 60–6 whooping, clinching a spot in the Conference USA title game in the process.

This is the fourth iteration of a blossoming rivalry and really the first time that both teams have entered the game desperately needing a win without the greater goal of a conference championship on the line. Sanford desperately needs a win to regain trust from the fan base and Marshall just needs a win to make this rivalry competitive. This game should be tense and emotional, hopefully the Tops are up for the challenge and continue their Moonshine Throwdown dominance and finally clinch a bowl spot.
