Last Week
WKU hosted FCS Central Arkansas on Thursday night, after jumping to a lead of 14–0 in the first quarter on a Steven Duncan touchdown pass to Josh Simon. UCA would answer and WKU would 21–14 lead at the half. Gaej Walker extended WKU’s lead to 28–14 on a 10-yard touchdown drive but the 14 point lead wasn’t enough as the Purple Bears scored 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to hand WKU a 35–28 loss in Tyson Helton’s debut as head coach.
FIU traveled to New Orleans to take on the Green Wave of Tulane. In a game that was supposed to be a statement opportunity for the Panthers, the buzz didn’t live up to the hype as Tulane jumped out to a 21–0 lead. the Green Wave led by as much as 42–7 and accumulated 545 yards of total offense, handing FIU a demoralizing 42–14 loss moving them to 0–1 on the season.

During the 2018 season, WKU was in the middle of a 1–6 start as they hosted FIU for homecoming. After making it to the red zone three times and settling for just 3 points, the Tops limped to a 38–17 defeat that was as close as it sounds ending WKU’s bowl eligibility streak at seven seasons

Last week’s loss has already taken away a lot of buzz on the season, while I think there were several signs that the Helton era will be different than the Sanford era, the loss to UCA definitely can’t be spun as anything but a failure. With that in mind, tonight’s game provides an instant opportunity to change the narrative for Tyson Helton, should he pull the upset on one of the preseason east division favorites in CUSA. If he wants to do that they’ll have to learn to finish the game, let’s hope that last week’s disaster was the perfect wake up call for this team.
