WKU hosted Liberty for their home opener. The Flames jumped out to an early lead that would forshadow WKU’s persistant troubles on the day. WKU would never lead as they trailed by as much as 14. Liberty ran for 354 yards on WKU’s veteran defense. The Hilltoppers would rally late cutting Liberty’s lead to six with 3:04 remaining on Craig Burt’s amazing touchdown catch. That would be as close as they got as WKU’s defense couldn’t get a stop and the Flames ran out the clock handing WKU a 30–24 Loss as the Hilltoppers fell to 0–2 on the season.
Middle Tennessee traveled to San Antonio to take on the UTSA Roadrunners. In a wild shootout where both teams combined for 954 yards, the Blue Raiders trailed most of the game as UTSA held a 34–23 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Middle would rally on the strength of two Asher O’Hara touchdown passes sandwiched between a Roadrunner field goal. O’Hara’s second touchdown pass to Yusuf Ali cut UTSA’s lead to 2 with 1:04 remaining but the two point conversion failed and UTSA ran out the clock handing MTSU a 37–35 Loss as the Blue Raiders fell to 0–3 on the season.

You definitely have to throw the records out of this one as neither team has found the victory column in 2020. The slow start takes some of the buzz off of this one. This is a golden opportunity for WKU to rewrite the narrative on the season and get fans back on board with a win over a hated rival. Should they succeed the preseason conference title aspirations are back on the table. Should they lose fans will be wondering what happened to a team with so much potential.
