Last Week
WKU traveled down to Nashville to play in-state rival Louisville. After containing the Cardinals for a quarter (only down 7–0). WKU would cut the lead to 14–7 on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Steven Duncan to Josh Simon with 11 minutes left in the second. From there the quarter was a horror show as WKU gave up long pass plays and a fumble recovery touchdown to take a 31–7 deficit to the locker room. WKU would play better in the second half outscoring the Cardinals 14–7, but 17 points was as close as they’d get in a 38–21 loss to move to 1–2 on the season.
UAB hosted in-state rival South Alabama. The Blazers jumped all over the Jaguars jumping out to a 28–3 halftime lead. Quarterback Tyler Johnston would add his third passing touchdown of the day to extend the lead to 32 and UAB would run the clock out from there to win handily 35–3 moving them to 3–0 on the season.

Last Meeting
In 2014, during Jeff Brohm's debut season, WKU would host the Blazers in Bowling Green. In what turned out to be a shootout, the Blazers started the scoring on a 100-yard kick return by JJ Nelson on the opening kickoff. WKU would respond scoring 27 of the next 34 points on three Anthony Wales touchdowns to take a 27–14 lead into the locker room.
UAB would come out of the locker room and score three unanswered touchdowns extending the lead to 35–27 on a 75-yard touchdown from Cody Clements to Josh Magee with 5 minutes left in the third. WKU would respond cutting the lead to 2 on an Antwane Grant touchdown catch. Ricardo Singh would then return a Clements interception 85 yards to give WKU a 39–35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
UAB would answer with a 15-yard touchdown run by future NFL star Jordan Howard giving UAB the last score of the game with 12:17 remaining. WKU would get two more chances on offense but couldn’t get past the UAB 33 yard line. The Blazers would then proceed to run out the clock and clinch a 42–39 victory over the Hilltoppers.

Despite the loss against Louisville, the bye week has reinvigorated me. We all anxiously wait to see how Ty Storey will do at quarterback and how WKU will stack up against the defending Conference USA Champions on their home field. Should the Tops emerge victorious, they’ll stand at 2–0 in the league with momentum heading into October. If that doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what does? Playing in front of one of their largest crowds (parents weekend) of the season should also help. Let’s hope they give fans something to cheer for before basketball season starts.
