Last Week
WKU was on a bye. Prior to that, the Tops hosted Marshall in the Moonshine Throwdown. In a game that was marred by turnovers, the game was tied at 10 heading into the fourth quarter. After Marshall broke the tie with a field goal. Steven Duncan helped the Tops grab a 17–13 lead on an 11-yard touchdown pass to Mik’quan Deane. Marshall eventually took a late lead after driving down 98 yards with less than two minutes left in the game. The Tops answered with a long drive of their own, getting inside the 15-yard line and were looking to at take the lead or force overtime before Steven Duncan was stripped by a Marshall defender, who recovered the fumble for a 20–17 Herd win, moving the Tops to a disappointing 1–4 record to start the season.
Charlotte was also on a bye. Prior to that, the 49ers traveled to Birmingham to take on the UAB Blazers. Though low scoring, it was all Blazers through and through as they scored the games first 21 points before Charlotte cut the lead to 21–7 with just 5:51 left in the fourth quarter on the strength on a four-yard touchdown run by quarterback Chris Reynolds. The Blazers recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove 55 yards in the following two minutes and 20 seconds to sew up a 28–7 win moving Charlotte to 2–3 on the season.

Last Meeting
Last year during WKU’s homecoming game, the 49ers traveled to Bowling Green and got handed the worst beatdown of the Mike Sanford era. WKU’s offense briefly returned to the offensive output of years prior as they racked up 627 yards and 45 points as Mike White tossed five touchdowns in a 45–17 homecoming route, winning the first game of the series against Conference USA rivals.

Excitement Level — 4
After yet another loss, WKU’s season is once again on the brink of disaster. This game offers an opportunity to get things back on the right track. From a pure buzz standpoint, a must-win game against a C-USA bottom-feeder causes much more anxiety than excitement. With a convincing win, Sanford can once again claim his team is moving in the fight direct. A loss probably loses what little patience he has left with the fans. Let’s hope the former is true instead of the latter.
