Last Week
WKU hosted Army at Houchens Industries L.T. Smith Stadium. The Tops jump out to a 7–0 lead on an 11-play 70 Yard drive that was capped off on Ty Storey’s one-yard touchdown run. WKU would slow down Army’s option attack limiting them to just 137 yards on the ground. WKU would continue to slow down the Black Knights all game and the offense would seal the victory extending the lead on another 1-yard touchdown run by Storey making it 17–0 with 4:02 left in the fourth quarter. Army would add a garbage-time touchdown to make it respectable as WKU prevailed 17–8 moving to 4–2 on the season.
Charlotte traveled to Miami to take on the FIU Panthers. After a solid first quarter, the 49ers led FIU 10–7 after an 8-yard touchdown by Aaron McAllister. The Panthers would impose their will the rest of the game outscoring the 49ers 35–13 from the second quarter on and rack up 510 yards of total offense as FIU would prevail 48–23 moving Charlotte to 2–4 on the season.

Last Meeting
Last Season, WKU came off a bye and traveled to the perennial conference doormat Charlotte 49ers. Neither team came out sharp as the 49ers led WKU 9–7 at the half. The second half was a giant let down as Charlotte would score 31 unanswered points against the Hilltoppers before a garbage-time touchdown drive led by Steven Duncan shortened the margin for WKU. That loss turned out to be the worst of the Mike Sanford era capitulating by a score of 40–14 and was the beginning of the end as he ended up being fired at the conclusion of the 2018 season.

While Charlotte isn’t the sexiest opponent, they’re the perfect opponent for homecoming. WKU looks to continue their recent string of strong play and beating an offense-oriented team like Charlotte is a good test to show continued growth. Having a good homecoming crowd and a beatable opponent with perfect weather make this a fun matchup. Hopefully, the Tops get to 5–2 before the crucial road-trip to Huntington for the Moonshine Throwdown.
