Last Week
WKU came off a bye and traveled to the perennial conference doormat Charlotte 49ers. Neither team came out sharp as the 49ers led WKU 9–7 at the half. The second half was a giant let down as Charlotte would score 31 unanswered points as the Hilltoppers before a garbage-time touchdown drive led by Steven Duncan as WKU had the worst loss of the Mike Sanford era capitulating by a score of 40–14 leaving turning up the heat on the second year coach.
ODU hosted Marshall, after a scoreless first quarter, the Herd exploded in the second quarter taking a 14–3 lead into the half. After trading scores, Old Dominion would cut the lead to 28–20 with 5 minutes left on a Blake LaRussa touchdown pass to Kesean Strong. That’s as close as the Monarchs would come as their run defense allowed Tyler King to break touchdown runs of 65 & 46 yards and a close game turned into a 42–20 blowout loss moving the Monarchs to 1–5.

Last Meeting
In a game that turned out to be the high point of Mike Sanford’s debut season, the Tops traveled to Norfolk to take on the 2–4 Monarchs. On the strength of three Mike White touchdown passes, the Tops took a 21–14 lead into the half. After a disastrous third quarter that caused WKU to fall behind 31–21. Mike White would rally the team with two more touchdown passes to Nacarius Fant & Quinn Jernigan to take the lead. Old Dominion wouldn’t go quietly as they drove to the WKU 45 but Steven Williams hail mary attempt was intercepted by Laverick Johnson to seal a 35–31 WKU victory moving the Tops to 5–2 at the time.

Excitement Level — 2
Last week’s disaster of a loss has killed off most of the fan interest and has caused anger to be replaced with apathy as most of the casual fans have already moved to basketball mode. That disinterest tied with the fact that Old Dominion is having a 1–5 season has taken all the excitement of this game out the window. A win today hardly moves the needle as the Tops will still only be 2–5, a loss and the team might join most of the fan base and give up on the season. It’s hard to have much faith in anything other than the latter happening. It will be fascinating to see what happens either way though that isn’t exciting.
