WKU hosted a reeling Charlotte team during homecoming weekend. WKU started off slow and fell behind the 49ers 7–0 eight minutes into the game. WKU would respond by scoring the next two touchdowns before Charlotte would answer on a 47-yard wheel route to Benny Lemay. Cory Munson would then drill a 45-yard field goal to take a 17–14 lead into the locker room. The second half was all WKU as they’d go on a 13–0 run in the third quarter capping off the days scoring on a trick play that Lucky Jackson threw an eight-yard touchdown to quarterback Ty Storey. WKU’s defense continued to clamp down the rest of the second half and WKU cruised to a 30–14 victory moving them to 5–2 (4–0) on the season.
Marshall traveled down to Boca Raton to take on the Owls of Florida Atlantic. In a classic shootout, the Herd and the Owls traded leads seven times over the course of the game. After being tied at 17 heading into the locker room. Marshall would enter the fourth quarter with a 22–17 lead. After trading touchdowns, FAU took a five-point lead with 3:36 remaining in the game on a 2 yard run by Malcolm Davidson. Marshall would respond going 77 yards on 10 plays in three minutes and take a five-point lead with 36 seconds remaining on a 17 yard run by Brenden Knox. Marshall’s Steven Gilmore would then intercept FAU quarterback Chris Robison to seal the crucial 36–31 road victory to move the Herd to 4–3 (2–1) on the season keeping themselves alive in the CUSA East race.

Last season, WKU hosted Marshall in the annual Moonshine Throwdown. In a game that was marred by turnovers, the game was tied at 10 heading into the fourth quarter. After Marshall broke the tie with a field goal. Steven Duncan helped the Tops grab a 17–13 lead on an 11-yard touchdown pass to Mik’quan Deane. Marshall eventually took a late lead after driving down 98 yards with less than two minutes left in the game. The Tops answered with a long drive of their own, getting inside the 15-yard line and were looking to at take the lead or force overtime before Steven Duncan was stripped by a Marshall defender, who recovered the fumble for a 20–17 Herd win, moving the Tops to a disappointing 1–4 record to start the 2019 season.

With the win, WKU eliminates one of the biggest challengers in their quest for the East division title and also gives them bragging rights against a fan base that loves to hate us.
