Western Kentucky Football got some great news two days before the season opener against Central Arkansas as Georgia transfer Jaden Hunter was granted a waiver to play during the 2019 season.
Hunter announced that he was transferring to WKU in May since then WKU has been working with the NCAA to get him cleared to play this season. The former 4-star linebacker is now arguably one of the most highly acclaimed players on the entire WKU roster and has three seasons of eligibility remaining. He’ll probably step into the role of the now-departed Ben Holt who left WKU to join his father at Purdue after last season.
WKU now has a staple of five players that will play critical roles on a defensive unit that lost Holt to transfer, Eli Brown to injury and Masai Whyte to graduation. Hunter joins Louisville transfer Malik Staples, Tennessee Tech transfer Clay Davis, Eastern Kentucky transfer Damon Lowe and converted safety Kyle Bailey on a unit that could quickly turn from a question mark to strength in 2019.
The rest of the WKU defense returns starters Juwaun Jones, DeAngelo Malone, Tacorian Darden, and many others and has been the strength of the team in fall camp. Clayton White’s unit has ranked in the 80’s the past two seasons according to S&P+ and with the mix of returning starters and transfers could be one of the better units in the conference in 2019 especially if Hunter and the linebacking corps lives up to newfound expectations.
