A big shoe in WKU’s schedule puzzle dropped as it was announced that the Hilltoppers would remain on Louisville’s schedule and that the game would be moved up from September 26th to September 12th.
As stated above, this game is now the season opener for the Hilltoppers. September 12th was supposed to be WKU’s trip to Indiana. It’s great to see the Cardinals remain on the schedule and WKU gets one opportunity for a signature P5 win against an in-state rival. This will be huge for WKU’s budget ($600,000 payout for traveling to Louisville.
This is the final game of a three-game series between the Cardinals and Hilltoppers. Last season in Nashville, WKU fell 38–21 in a game that wasn’t that close. In 2018 the Hilltoppers lost a 17–20 heartbreaker in Louisville. Louisville leads the series 21–12 with WKU’s last win coming in 1975 (21–17).
The Cardinals are set to return a veteran offense with stars such as quarterback Micale Cunningham, receiver Tutu Atwell & running back Javeion Hawkins. It will be a great test for WKU’s veteran defense as it will be strength versus strength in the opener. Should WKU come out victorious they’ll have one of the few P5 wins in the G5 (as most matchups were canceled) which would look great for their resume at the end of the season.
Stay tuned for more scheduling news as it drops.
