WKU Football: Mitchell Tinsley To Enter Transfer Portal, Will Play in Bowl Game
The Tops' second-leading receiver will be leaving The Hill after WKU's bowl game against App State.
Western Kentucky wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley is entering the transfer portal after the Boca Raton Bowl.
Tinsley ended the season as the Hilltoppers’ number two receiver, behind Jerreth Sterns, hauling 80 catches for 1299 yards and 12 touchdowns.
The Hutchinson CC (Kansas) product came into his own in the back half of the season, scoring at least one touchdown in all but one of the Tops’ final seven games (Marshall), including scoring twice in three of the final four games, including the Tops’ loss to UTSA in the Conference USA title game.
With the loss of Tinsley to the portal - and his most likely destination being Texas Tech in following outgoing Hilltopper offensive coordinator Zach Kittley - WKU will be down their two leading receivers from 2021, along with Jerreth Sterns.
However, the Tops will return Oregon transfer Daewood Davis (706 yards, eight touchdowns on 41 receptions), Malachi Corley (690 yards and seven touchdowns on 71 receptions), the return of Josh Simon from a back injury that kept him out of nearly all of 2021 and Josh Stearns, who didn’t post eye-popping numbers but should be in line for more playing time with the departure of his brother and now Tinsley.
While Tinsley is a big loss, I fully expect not only one of the returning receivers to fill the void, but head coach Tyson Helton uses the transfer portal better than few others in college football, so don’t be surprised if the 2022 leading receiver for WKU isn’t yet on the roster.
